Rules & Regulations
Absences and Attendance
Attendance is taken in the classroom each day immediately after the bell rings. Students arriving late must stop by the office prior to going to class for a late slip. If your child will not be at school, please call the Laurel School office secretary at 324-0186 x3001 on the first day of the absence. Scheduling appointments before or after school and not planning retreats during the school week would benefit your child and our instructional program.
Birthdays
To avoid hurt feelings, private birthday party invitation should be mailed, rather than passed out in class, unless the whole class is invited. Check with your child’s teacher for her policy regarding classroom celebrations.
Class Parties
Several parties for the children are organized by the teacher and the head room parents during the year. Parents are asked by the room parents to help in some way with the parties. There will be parties for Halloween, Winter Celebrations, Valentine’s Day and the end of school. On Halloween, the children bring their costumes to school and present a Halloween parade for the parents. Look for additional details in the weekly newsletter!
Class Placement
In the Spring, grade level teachers in collaboration with the Principal organize class groupings for the following year. New students are assigned to classes by the Principal when they register. All parents will fill out an end of the year "input" form which will assist the school with placement decisions.
Conferences and Report Cards
Each parent will have a conference with the teacher in the fall. Parents may ask for additional conferences at any time. There are three report periods at Laurel. The first trimester written report card period is issued in November.
Health Policy
Pupils attending school should be in good physical health and without signs of contagious diseases. Communicable diseases should be reported to the Laurel School office so that exposure notices may be sent home with classmates. Parents are asked to keep their sick children home until all signs of contagiousness including vomiting, diarrhea and fever have subsided for 24 hours (medicine-free). We have a “No Nit” policy for lice. Students will be checked in the office before returning to school after a lice episode. School personnel can assist with the administering of medication to students only if the proper permission and prescription form is filed in the Laurel School office. Students taking medication at school must notify their teachers and file the proper form in the Laurel School office. All medication is to be kept in the school office, with the exception of Epi Pens, which can be kept in the classroom and/or lunch box with the proper medical orders. Vision and hearing screenings are conducted in Kindergarten and Second Grade, and for all new students and teacher referrals.
Dress Expectations
Children will wear shoes suitable for running each day. No flip flops. Sneakers are to be worn on P.E. days.
Undergarments will be covered at all times.
No bare midriffs.
Hats will be off or turned backwards, and hoods will be down during classtime.
Lunches
All children except morning kindergartners need to bring their lunches to school. Milk is available daily if ordered and paid for in advance. The PTO organizes volunteers to support a hot food lunch program (Choice Nutrition) everyday for those who purchase it.
Permission to Leave School
If a child has to leave school during the day for any reason, a note should be given to the Laurel School office and the responsible adult needs to sign out the child from the office.
Laurel Handball Rules:
1.All students must stand behind the white line. If a student is pushing, shoving, or standing inside the court they have to go to the end of the line.
2. The ball must bounce before hitting the wall and must bounce once before being hit.
3. If the ball hits the wall and bounces on the line or outside the line, the person who hit it is out.
4. The first person in line is the line judge and makes the calls. The line judge stands on the opposite side of the wall. No one may argue with the line judges call. The line just must pay attention! (one re-do is allowed if the line judge is confused)
5.Rainbow-a student calls rainbow & the ball goes over their head(if the student gets hit with the ball they are out). The opponent then has to return the ball to the wall.
6. No other rules! Students will say rules like 'Ace', 'Holdie', etc. They are NOT allowed
Playground Rules
Playground rules are for the safe conduct of playtime. Common sense is the basis for all decisions that are made when on yard duty. Specific rules are made to be clear and consistent for the students.
Volunteers
Please remember to sign in at the school office and record your time spent in the classroom, library, or elsewhere at school. This is necessary for reports made by the PTO and Site Council. In addition, it enables you to be covered by the PTO’s insurance, and it helps us locate you if necessary.
Student Incident Reports
Student Incident Reports are aligned to the ten life skills: acceptance, compassion, cooperation, friendship generosity, honesty, perseverance, respect, responsibility, self-discipline. They are issued to students when there is a need to change the student’s behavior. The purpose of the Student Incident Report is to allow for immediate communication between the home and school so we can work together to resolve a problem. This report is not a part of the student’s permanent record, but is used by the teacher, parent and principal to monitor student behavior. Student Incident Reports require a parent’s signature and indicate the consequences of the student’s action. A copy of the report is given to:
