Laurel SEL Initiatives

Laurel Life Skills Program

A facet of Laurel School’s Social-Emotional Learning includes our school-wide character education program, The Life Skills Program.  This program focuses on the following ten Life Skills:  Perseverance, Compassion, Cooperation, Gratitude, Self-Awareness, Flexibility, Integrity, Problem-Solving, Personal Best, and Courage.

Second Step

A big focus of Laurel's SEL work is the use of Second Step curriculum.  Second Step is a research-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL). Second Step is comprised of four units:

  • Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting
  • Emotion Management
  • Empathy & Kindness
  • Problem-Solving

RULER

Another facet of Laurel's SEL work is the implementation of the RULER program.  RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER supports entire school communities in:

  • Understanding the value of emotions
  • Building the skills of emotional intelligence
  • Creating and maintaining positive school climates
